KPMG, a global network of professional services firms, has announced its acquisition of the Montréal-based law firm Sweibel Novek Rabbat, L.L.P. (S·N·R), marking a significant expansion of its legal services in Québec.

S·N·R, established in 1994, specializes in tax planning, tax litigation, estate planning, and corporate and commercial legal services, catering to a broad business clientele.

With this acquisition, the professionals from S·N·R will integrate into KPMG Law in Canada, joining a team of over 25 lawyers in Québec and expanding the firm’s national legal expertise to 150 lawyers.

“This acquisition represents an important milestone for our growth strategy aimed at providing a unique approach to our clients’ business needs leveraging our multidisciplinary capabilities to offer the best legal blend,” said Benoit Lacoste Bienvenue, regional managing partner, Québec region, KPMG in Canada.

“According to our Focus Québec survey, 82 per cent of Québec companies are accelerating their succession plans. Enhancing our offering to business families is more essential than ever to allow entrepreneurs to address all aspects surrounding the implementation of an optimal transition plan.”

This merger not only strengthens KPMG Law’s presence in major Canadian centers but also extends its global reach through KPMG International, offering access to about 3,800 lawyers in 143 markets worldwide. KPMG Law provides services in various legal fields including business law, charitable and not-for-profit law, employment and labour law, estates and trusts, immigration law, tax law, and tax litigation.

Sydney Sweibel, Founding Partner of S·N·R, expressed enthusiasm for the merger, noting the firm’s history of building strong client relationships and delivering personalized, value-added services.

“We are thrilled to join forces with KPMG and augment their business, personal and estate planning capabilities through an even more comprehensive range of services tailored to their specific needs,” said Sweibel.

Joining KPMG represents an opportunity for S·N·R to offer an even broader range of services, enriching KPMG’s capabilities in business, personal, and estate planning.

This acquisition underscores KPMG’s commitment to expanding its legal services and supporting the comprehensive needs of family businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Québec and beyond.
