New judicial appointments enhance diversity and expertise at Ontario’s Superior Court

by HR Law Canada

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, The Honourable Arif Virani, has announced new appointments to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency, merit, and diversity in the judicial application process established in 2016.

Colin P. Stevenson, previously Founding Partner at Stevenson Whelton LLP in Toronto, has been appointed as a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto, filling the vacancy left by Justice A.M. Pollak who became a supernumerary judge earlier this year.

Additionally, Gilead Kay, who has been practicing as a sole practitioner in North York, steps into a new role as Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, Family Court, in Oshawa. This position was created as part of the Budget Implementation Act, 2022, to address the growing need for judicial oversight in family law matters.

Minister Virani stated, “I wish Justices Stevenson and Kay every success as they take on their new roles. I am confident they will serve the people of Ontario well as members of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario.”

Justice Colin P. Stevenson, originally from Northern Ireland, brings a rich educational background with law degrees from Trinity College, Dublin, and Osgoode Hall Law School. Stevenson, who was called to the Ontario Bar in 1988, has a strong professional background in commercial and administrative litigation. His dedication to the legal profession was highlighted during his presidency of the Ontario Bar Association in 2019-2020.

Justice Gilead Kay, an Osgoode Hall Law School alumnus, has spent the last 25 years specializing in family law. His comprehensive experience in the field, including his role with the Family Responsibility Office and his contributions to the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, have prepared him well for his new judicial responsibilities in the Family Court in Oshawa.

The new justices bring a wealth of experience and a commitment to justice to their new roles, reflecting the ongoing effort to ensure the judiciary mirrors the diversity and needs of Canadians.
