In an effort to assist articling students facing unsafe or untenable situations due to harassment or discrimination during their articles, the Law Society of Alberta has implemented the Articling Placement Program. Under this program, the Equity Ombudsperson assesses the eligibility of students and facilitates their placement at roster firms or organizations to complete the remainder of their articles.
Since the program’s launch, the Law Society has received positive feedback from both principals and articling students, indicating its value and the ongoing necessity for such support.
Recognizing the importance of providing diverse and safe environments for students transitioning from challenging articles, the Law Society is now seeking to expand the roster of firms and organizations participating in the program.
Firms of various sizes, as well as legal departments in corporate and government settings, are encouraged to apply. Those interested in joining the Roster Firm/Organization list can review the program’s criteria and submit their applications accordingly.
The Law Society of Alberta aims to create a supportive system that allows students to exit harmful articles and continue their articling experience in a safe and conducive environment. For more information about the Articling Placement Program, firms and organizations can visit the Law Society’s website or reach out to the Equity Ombudsperson for further details.
