The Ontario government announced on Wednesday the appointment of Justice Terry Peter Waltenbury to the Ontario Court of Justice. The appointment will be effective September 28, 2023.
Justice Waltenbury brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Called to the Ontario bar in 2001, he began his legal career at Weaver Simmons LLP in Sudbury, where he worked from 1999 to 2005, initially as an articling student and later as an associate. Subsequently, he joined Marcuccio Law to focus on criminal law. In 2010, Waltenbury moved to Paquette & Paquette, where he expanded his scope to include civil litigation.
In 2019, Waltenbury founded his own law firm, Waltenbury Law. He joined the Sudbury Crown Attorney’s Office in 2021, where he notably conducted Sudbury’s first criminal jury trial during the COVID-19 pandemic. During his tenure at the Crown Attorney’s Office, he also took on a mentorship role for new lawyers and articling students.
Beyond his practice, Justice Waltenbury has contributed to the legal community by participating in panels for organizations such as the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the Advocates’ Society. He has also been a speaker at Sudbury’s annual Continuing Legal Education conference, covering topics like evidentiary and ethical issues as well as strategies for dealing with difficult witnesses.
Between 2015 and 2020, Waltenbury served as a board member of the Health Sciences North Foundation, where he helped raise funds for the Sudbury hospital system. He also held multiple executive roles within the Sudbury District Law Association and served as the Criminal Lawyers’ Association area director for Sudbury and Manitoulin Island.
Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Waltenbury to Fort Frances, where he will assume his new duties later this month.
