Two companies fined after worker struck, injured by ejection clamp in Saskatchewan

by HR Law Canada

Two companies have been fined after a December 2022 workplace incident near Major, Sask., left a worker seriously injured. Strathcona Resources Ltd. and Steel View Energy & Industrial Services Ltd. each pleaded guilty last month to separate safety violations linked to the incident.

The Kindersley Provincial Court fined Strathcona Resources Ltd. $85,000, including a surcharge, after it admitted to violating clause 3-12(a)(ii) of the Saskatchewan Employment Act. According to the court, the company, as a contractor, failed to ensure a safe work process at the site, which led to the worker’s injury. An additional charge against Strathcona was withdrawn.

Steel View Energy & Industrial Services Ltd. was also fined $55,000, including a surcharge, after pleading guilty to contravening clause 3-1(a) of Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. The company admitted it did not meet its duty to maintain a safe work environment and systems for its employees.

The charges arose from an incident on December 5, 2022, when a worker was struck by an ejection clamp, resulting in serious injuries.
