Law firms, legal suppliers among winners of BC’s Top Employers 2025

by HR Law Canada

Several law firms and legal-related organizations in British Columbia have been recognized as top workplaces in the province, earning a spot on BC’s Top Employers 2025 list. The annual designation, organized by Mediacorp Canada — the firm behind Canada’s Top 100 Employers — highlights employers that lead their industries in workplace policies, benefits, and employee engagement.

The list, now in its 20th year, evaluates organizations on eight criteria, including work atmosphere, benefits, employee development, and community involvement.

This year’s winners in the HR law space include Clio, DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, Harris & Company LLP, the Law Society of British Columbia, Lawson Lundell LLP, and WorkSafeBC.

“British Columbia has always been one of the most progressive regions in the country in terms of benefits, flexibility, and forward-thinking environmental policies — and this year’s winners are no exception,” said Richard Yerema, executive editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

Clio

Legal technology firm Clio was recognized for its investment in employee growth and community impact. The company provides an in-house performance coach and dedicates three days per quarter for company hackathons, allowing employees to collaborate on passion projects. Clio also donates one per cent of its profits—at least $100,000 annually—to initiatives that promote access to justice, diversity in technology, and lawyer well-being. Employees are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities with 2.5 paid days off for community service. The company also offers new parents maternity and parental leave top-up to 100 per cent of salary for up to 16 weeks and a $500 contribution to a registered education savings plan (RESP) for each child.

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP

International law firm DLA Piper (Canada) LLP was recognized for its focus on work-life balance and professional development. Employees receive at least three weeks of vacation, with the option to carry forward or cash out up to 10 unused days. The firm supports professional development with tuition subsidies for job-related courses and academic scholarships of up to $1,000 per child for employees’ children. Health and wellness benefits include access to an on-site fitness facility, instructor-led classes, and personal trainer services. Employees also have access to a defined-contribution pension plan and mental health benefits of up to $3,000 per year.

Harris & Company LLP

Vancouver-based Harris & Company LLP was recognized for its flexible work arrangements and education benefits. The firm starts new employees with three weeks of paid vacation and five paid personal days annually for personal matters, medical appointments, or emergencies. Tuition subsidies for job-related courses are available up to $6,500 per year. Employees can take advantage of flexible work options, including a hybrid work model and reduced summer hours that allow early departures before long weekends. Harris & Company also offers a wellness spending account of up to $500 annually.

Law Society of British Columbia

The Law Society of British Columbia earned recognition for its hybrid work policies, employee benefits, and support for new parents. Employees receive a one-time reimbursement of up to $400 for home office setup and can participate in a formal earned days-off program. The organization also offers maternity and parental leave top-ups to 70 per cent of salary for new mothers for 25 weeks, with an additional $100 per week for the next 25 weeks. New fathers and adoptive parents receive 70 per cent of salary for up to 10 weeks. Health benefits include a mental health practitioner benefit of up to $1,000 per year and a fitness allowance of $100 annually.

Lawson Lundell LLP

Lawson Lundell LLP was recognized for its charitable initiatives and employee wellness programs. The firm provides employees with five paid sick days annually and a mental health practitioner benefit of up to $1,500 per year. Employees are encouraged to engage with their communities through a paid day off for volunteering. New parents receive maternity and parental leave top-up to 100 per cent of salary for up to 17 weeks and can gradually phase back into work. Employees also have access to flexible work hours and telecommuting options.

WorkSafeBC

WorkSafeBC, which administers British Columbia’s workplace health and safety system, was named a top employer for its career development opportunities and employee benefits. The organization offers in-house career planning, leadership development programs, and tuition subsidies of up to $7,000 per year for job-related courses. Employees receive a defined-benefit pension plan and a health benefits package that extends into retirement with full premium coverage. New parents receive maternity and parental leave top-ups to 75 per cent of salary for up to 29 weeks. The organization also provides access to back-up child care services through Kids & Company.

Recognizing excellence in BC workplaces

This year’s list of BC’s Top Employers includes organizations of all sizes, from large firms to small businesses. Kristina Leung, managing editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, said that the inclusion of 19 employers with fewer than 100 employees highlights that creating an exceptional workplace is not limited to large organizations.

“It sends an important message to other BC organizations that you don’t need to be a large employer to create first-class workplaces that also protect our shared environment,” Leung said.
