Sudbury, Ont., employer fined $50,000 for failing to file health tax returns

Ontario’s Ministry of Finance has fined a Sudbury-based company $50,000 for failing to file mandatory employer health tax (EHT) returns and remittances over multiple years.

T.H.A.T. Group, officially known as Tanner High Angle Technologies, was convicted in September 2024 after the company did not submit required annual EHT returns from 2017 to 2021 and missed filing 38 additional EHT statements and remittances between July 2017 and December 2022.

The penalties, handed down in court, include two fines totalling $50,000 along with a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge and additional costs as mandated under Ontario’s Provincial Offences Act. The Ministry of Finance, which administers the EHT program to support health funding across Ontario, stated the company was obligated to comply with these filings to ensure transparency and accountability in tax remittances.
